The Emergement

The Business Club AUSTRIALIA was founded in Vienna on 9.12.2000 by a small group of dedicated people. Founding members were Austrians, Fans of Australia and real Australians, who set temselves the goal to compensate and balance the long geographic distance between EU member states and Australia a.w.a. New Zealand through personal contacts and the development of a network of individuals.
For this reason The Business Club AUSTRIALIA has also accepted the official representation of the South-Australian Wirrina Cove Golf & Country Club in Europe. Through the integration of sports activities like golf, people get closer to each other and become able to do things, which seemed impossible before.

The Name AUSTRIALIA

FOUR HUNDRED YEARS ago, on May 14, 1606, Captain Pedro Fernandez de Quiros, a Portuguese explorer in the service of Spain, made landfall on an island which is now part of Vanuatu (formerly New Hebrides). He believed that he had reached the fabled Unknown South Land and, with great ceremony, took possession of it for Spain and Portugal. In fact, in a breathtakingly bold proclamation and with great religious fervour, he took possession of a great part of the whole southern hemisphere. One version of the translated proclamation goes as follows:

“Let the heavens, the earth, the waters with all their creatures and all those here present witness that I, Captain Pedro Fernandez de Quiros, in the name of Jesus Christ, hoist this emblem of the Holy Cross on which Jesus Christ's person was crucified and whereon He gave His life for the ransom and remedy of the human race. On this day of Pentecost, 14 May 1606, I take possession of all this part of the South as far as the pole in the name of Jesus, which from now on shall be called the Southern land AUSTRIALIA of the Holy Spirit and this always and forever to the end that to all natives, in all the said lands, the holy, sacred Evangel may be preached zealously and openly.”

The choice of the name, the wording of the proclamation and the ceremony of erecting the crucifix which accompanied it are all significant and were to have consequences in the later history of Australia. In the first instance, the name AUSTRIALIA (in honour of the "House of Austria" as the Hapsburgs were called in Spain) was later incorrectly translated as Australia by an early translator and taken up in this form by Matthew Flinders. There is further confusion here because, from very ancient times, the fabled south land was called Terra Australis Incognita – the unknown land in the south..
